Abstract

    Underwater augmented reality is a very challenging task and amongst several issues, one of the most crucial aspects involves real-time tracking. Particles present in water combined with the uneven absorption of light decrease the visibility in the underwater environment. Dehazing methods are used in many areas to improve the quality of digital image data that is degraded by the influence of the environment. Applications using computer vision algorithms require a certain degree of input image quality to provide successful results. Some methods are particularly sensitive to artifacts that may appear in images and videos captured in uncontrolled environments such as noise, low contrast, color distortions, or lack of light in the scene. As it is not possible to ensure ideal conditions in all situations, additional processing has to be implemented to mitigate the negative weather conditions in the environment. One of such methods is dehazing, which aims to improve the visibility of images that contain haze or fog.
