Introduction

The Spartan3an Addon card is meant to be used with a Xilinx Spartan3an demonstration/evaluation board equipped with an 40-Pin Expansion connector. This board extends the I/O capabilities of the base platform and provides an I/O consistency among various platforms

The Spartan-3an board has external 5v Relay interfacing, indicated as in Figure. ULN2803 is used as a driver for FPGA I/O lines, drivers output connected to relay modules. PTB connector provided for external power supply if needed.

Bluetooth

Bluetooth is a proprietary open wireless technology standard for exchanging data over short distances (using short-wavelength radio transmissions in the ISM band from 2400–2480 MHz) from fixed and mobile devices, creating personal area networks (PANs) with high levels of security.

Zigbee

Zigbee is a specification for a suite of high level communication protocols using small, low-power digital radios based on an IEEE 802 standard for personal area networks.

RF Module

The RF module, as the name suggests, operates at Radio Frequency. The corresponding frequency range varies between 30 kHz & 300 GHz. In this RF system, the digital data is represented as variations in the amplitude of carrier wave. This kind of modulation is known as Amplitude Shift Keying (ASK).

Interfacing RF Module with Spartan-3an FPGA

The Spartan-3an board has external RF Module interfacing, indicated as in Figure. This RF module comprises of an RF Transmitter and an RF Receiver. The transmitter/ receiver (Tx/Rx) pair operates at a frequency of 434 MHz. An RF transmitter receives serial data and transmits it wirelessly through RF through its antenna connected at pin4 at the rate of 1Kbps - 10Kbps.The transmitted data is received by an RF receiver operating at the same frequency as that of the transmitter. The encoder is used for encoding parallel data for transmission feed while reception is decoded by a decoder. Finally connected with FPGA I/O lines.

Stepper Motor

A stepper motor (or step motor) is a brushless DC electric motor that divides a full rotation into a number of equal steps.

Interfacing Stepper Motor with Spartan-3an FPGA

The Spartan-3an board has external stepper motor interfacing, indicated as in Figure. Stepper Motor is driven by ULN2803A. It is a high-voltage, high-current Darlington transistor array. ULN2803 is used as a driver for port I/O lines, drivers output connected to stepper motor, PTB connector provided for external power supply if needed.
